Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Senior Mine Engineer develops and integrates long- and short-term mine plans for an early-stage operation, with direct influence on mine design, construction execution, and operational readiness. Applying engineering first principles, this role optimizes production sequencing, equipment selection, and operating strategies to maximize mine value and support a successful start-up. The position is highly collaborative and plays a foundational role in shaping planning practices, technical standards, and the long-term performance of the operation.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, optimize, and implement short, medium, and long-term mine plans, including design and scheduling. Convert long-term plans into executable short-range schedules.
  • Generate designs for lateral and vertical development, stopes, and mine infrastructure. 
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to integrate sound plans for ground control, ventilation, electrical power, mine services, and infrastructure into comprehensive and practical mine plans.
  • Oversee business partner deliverables for quality, accuracy, and alignment with overall project objectives. Prioritize activities, update schedules, monitor progress, and track budgets.
  • Facilitate regular planning and progress update meetings to coordinate efforts, plan activities, and maintain accountability.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, memos, reports, drawings, and cost estimates. 
  • Provide mine engineering and design services for studies (scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, detailed design, NI 43-101 reports).
  • Be a key contributor to the establishment of workflows, templates, tools, policies, and procedures for Technical Services and Operations departments.
  • Assess geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions.
  • Support the development and implementation of mitigation and recovery plans for ground control and water management.
  • Monitor these plans for compliance and effectiveness to maintain stability and safety.
  • Collaborate with the survey team to ensure proper layout of designs, validate as-built data, provide QA/QC and field support when required.
  • Prepare detailed Scopes of Work (SOW) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for mining-related services and equipment. Review and evaluate vendor, contractor, and consultant proposals.
  • Support the procurement team throughout the bidding, negotiation, and selection process.
  • Support the development and of mine site budgets and strategic business plans.
  • Track actuals against planned costs and prepare accurate cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to support the building and calibration of economic models.
  • Monitor adherence to engineering codes, regulations, safety, environmental practices, and performance standards.
  • Ensure designs and activities align with MSHA regulations and internal safety standards; participate in audits and inspections.
  • Provide mentorship and technical support to junior engineers and technicians; participate in internal knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering
  2. 5 years mine engineering with strong operational background. Experience working on-site during early stages of mine development and construction is considered an asset.
  3. Proficiency in Deswik mine design, scheduling, and stope optimization software
  4. Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite
  5. Background in underground mine design and scheduling. Better than working knowledge of rock mechanics, underground drill and blast, mine ventilation, water management, and cemented rock backfill.
  6. Experience in longitudinal and transverse longhole mining in a geological complex environment.
  7. Knowledge of mine economics and cost modelling. Previous experience with Xeras financial modelling software is considered an asset.
  8. Understanding of applicable MSHA regulations
  9. Strong verbal, written, analytical and communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  10. Ability to work effectively as a key member of a small team in a dynamic environment.
  11. Take on diverse responsibilities and maintain a solution-oriented approach to challenges
  12. Valid driver’s license and authorized to work in the US.
